Costuming, Practice Attire, Makeup

Dress Code for Practice

Instructors at all levels recommend the following dance practice attire:

Girls:

  • Bodysuits (black)
  •  dance tights or leotards (black)
  •  t-shirts or tank tops (black)
  •  sports bra
  •  sport shorts
  •  sweatpants
  •  sweatshirts black
  • socks
  • dance slippers

Boys:

  • T-shirts or tank tops (white)
  •  sports shorts
  •  sweats
  •  sweatshirts (white)
  •  socks
  •  dance slippers

Please note constrictive clothing such as blue jeans or long shirts are not allowed. Also not allowed is dangling jewelry, hats, stocking feet, or bare feet. Long hair, for both boys and girls, must be put up, preferably into a bun or braids, not just a ponytail. Hair that is too short to be pulled back, but long enough to fall into the eyes, should be pinned back.

Costume Rentals

Our costume committee, through its dedication and imagination, has created, and continues to create, costumes for use at all levels of the organization.

The organization believes that club-owned costuming creates opportunities for dancers to experience multiple regions of the Ukraine without having to incur the expense of owning their own costumes for each region.  This is especially important at the senior levels of the organization, where a dancer may learn dances from four regions or more within a single year.

Our costume committee members are always ready to answer any questions in regards to our costuming.

Some tips for Costumes, Hair and Makeup

  • More bobby pins are better than less.
  • Hairspray and hair nets are a must for girls. French braids on either side.
  • Boys should have their hair secure, as well. Gel and hairspray are useful! Longer hair tied down.
  • Make sure you have red lipstick for the girls otherwise the audience can not see their mouth on stage – lighter shades get washed out by the lights.
  • Pin beads down on either side of the chest so they don’t fly up and hit the girl or slide backwards and choke them.
  • Take a look at the costume picture (and double check with costume committee or instructor) to make sure headpieces are on properly.  Some are parallel to the floor, some are like a headband.
  • Hutsul – put on the back skirt panel first and the front panel second.
  • Tie all belts tight!
  • Tuck in laces on shoes.
  • The document below outlines makeup requirements and tips. The colour swatches are there for colour guides. You do not have to use that brand, this is just for shades. You may use that brand at your own discretion. We are aiming for a heavy evening eye makeup look with natural colours.
  • There is always someone to help with this. Ask older dancers, admin, instructors, other parents for help with hair and makeup.
  • Please see the makeup requirements PDF
